Vegetable Beds
Depending on weather - don't sow anything too early if it is still wet and cold. A traditional test - if you can drop your pants and sit your bare bottom on the soil, without feeling the cold, it's warm enough to sow seeds!
- Prepare seed beds for brassicas; sow
- Sow swede, turnip in final beds
- Plant first early potatoes (week 4?)
- Sow early peas, broad beans, carrot, radish
- Dig up mint plants and replant (to keep them under control and avoid rust)
- Leeks taking up space can be lifted and heeled into an odd spot; saves space, stops them bolting, but keeps your supplies fresh.
- Thin spring cabbages and use as spring greens
- Garlic can be planted now
- Spring clean herb bed
- Take heel cuttings, and grow on in pots of compost
- Most herbs can be sown now direct - but sow Basil in pots in house
- Divide large clumps of mint, lemon balm, chives, sage - split in two
and plant the other elsewhere
- Sow Tomatoes in pots in house
