The Winchester and District Allotment Holders Society was founded in October 1905, we are therefore enjoying our one hundred and first year. We were originally part of a larger group of allotment within Winchester. Ironically we were one of the first sites to come under the threat of sale and possible development. In response to this the collective associations schemed to buy the site for themselves. As a result we are now privately owned but do have to act within the constraints of a covenant placed upon the land by the church commissionaires. We are currently enjoying something of a "boom" and all the twelve acres are occupied and we have a waiting list for new members. Our philosophy is very much to encourage our members to enjoy what they are doing and in the way that they want to do it. As a result all of the plots have their own look and feel. Some of our plots are maintained by groups from a local Day Centre and the Probation Service. We are fortunate that our covenant specifies that the land shall only be used for allotments and smallholdings, which goes someway to securing our future but also permits us to keep livestock on the premises. All members wishing to keep animals must agree to abide by our "Good Practice Guide"which has been approved by the RSPCA.
